Fishing Diary - 23rd August 2007 - Sherwood Forest Farm Park Fishery
I had not fished Sherwood before, but had heard good reports. The fishery tends to be described as a "silver fish" venue, but the species stocked included carp and some large bream, so the expectation of some good sport was high.
There are five lakes on the complex and we chose to fish the Sherwood lake. This choice was mainly driven by the fact that keepnets can be used when leisure fishing, however, we discovered from the bailiff that carp cannot be put in the net. As we were after carp, it turned out to be a waste of time putting the nets out as we only caught carp.
The first thing to become apparent was that the lake is much smaller than it appears on the photographs I had seen on the internet. Sherwood lake is long and narrow, very narrow. I chose to fish peg 1, close to the bailiff's hut, it seemed a likely spot for targeting carp as there was a bed of lilies midway across the lake. The drawback to choosing such a peg was the fact that the vegetation I was casting to was very close, too close really, due to the narrowness of the lake. Using the reel's line clip to avoid being snagged in the vegetation was definately the order of the day.

Although we took out half a dozen carp apiece, none were above 4lb and I did not bother to photograph or weigh any of the catch. A young boy who was fishing a few pegs away kept walking around the lake quizing anglers as to what they had caught. According to the reports he brought us nobody was catching, apart from the odd small fish here and there. Though it was a fairly disappointing day it appeared that we were the most successful anglers on that water on the day.
Yet again, it was a very hot day and the greatest difficulty was to entice the fish to feed.
