Fishing Line - Mono

Since it was first introduced monofilament fishing line has become the most popular and commonly used line available to the angler. The line can be manufactured to incorporate specific features that lend themselves to a variety of applications.

Monofilament line is manufactured from a recipe of various polymers that are extruded to give line of a desired diameter and breaking strength.

The mix of polymers and other chemicals at the manufacture stage controls the various qualities that are inherent in a particular line. For example strength, stretch, abrasion resistance, stiffness, colour, buoyancy and knot strength.

Like everything else in life, monofilament line is available in varying degrees of quality, the more expensive lines being subjected to higher levels of quality control.

When choosing a monofilament line you should consider the line's intended usage. For instance, if you intend to use the line for waggler float fishing or feeder fishing a sinking line is best suited to the purpose. If you are intending to use the line for floater fishing then a floating line fits the requirements.

The inherent stretchability of monofilament line has its good points and bad points. Line stretch makes setting a hook less positive, but cushions the strain of casting heavy baits or playing large fish.

Monofilament line is much cheaper than braided line and is the best choice for a wide range of fishing techniques.
